Government of Canada Grants $300,000 to the Societe des musees quebecois to Support its Marketing Activities in Canada and the United States

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - May 12, 2005) - The Honourable Jacques Saada, Minister of Canada Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Francophonie, is proud to announce that the Government of Canada has pledged to financially support the Societe des musees quebecois in its efforts to develop and promote museum tourism in Quebec.

The Societe des musees quebecois's project shows that culture, tourism and the economy are closely intertwined. By attracting an international clientele, culture plays an active role in the economic development of Canada and Quebec.

"The richness and diversity of our museums extends beyond our borders. The increase in foreign tourists year after year is a clear indication of that reputation. It is therefore important to support this growth," stated Mr. Saada. "Museums have always been included in our tourism offering. However, the growing interest in cultural tourism requires that museums position themselves as major players in the tourism industry," he added.

The Societe des musees quebecois will focus on thematic tour routes to illustrate the importance of adding a museum visit to travelers' itineraries.

"Many Quebec museums are attracting visitors seeking more knowledge about history, science and art. The World Tourism Organization (WTO) attributes this boom in cultural tourism to a new trend among tourists to have a real, complete participatory learning experience," the Minister said.

The marketing activities will further the development and consolidation of partnerships with the Ministere du tourisme du Quebec, the Canadian Tourism Commission, distribution networks, regional tourism associations and hotel operators.

Canada Economic Development's non-repayable $300,000 contribution comes from the market development component of its IDEA-SME program.

Canada Economic Development's mandate is to promote the economic development of the regions of Quebec.
