Government of Canada and Groupe Robert to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Freight Transportation

SAINT-NICOLAS, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - July 6, 2009) - Mr. Jacques Gourde, Member of Parliament for Lotbiniere-Chutes-de-la-Chaudiere and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Works and Government Services, today announced the Government of Canada will help the freight transportation sector reduce the emission of greenhouse gases and other air contaminants.

Under Transport Canada's Freight Technology Demonstration Fund, Groupe Robert, based in Saint-Nicolas, will receive a contribution of up to $500,000 for a fuel reduction project.

"Our government is proud to support this project that will benefit the environment and help make the transportation sector more competitive at a critical time in our economy," said MP Gourde. "We are committed to reducing Canada's greenhouse gas emissions, and this is one more step we are taking to achieve that."

"During this difficult economic period, our government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, is taking action with key investments that support the Canadian economy and that are good for the transportation sector, as well as our environment," said Canada's Transport Minister, John Baird. "This program will help transport companies and facility operators acquire the technologies that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce fuel costs."

This project will use data collection software to determine which specific driver behaviours are consistent with optimal fuel economy. Two hundred and fifty data collection systems will be used to gather information from more than 1,000 drivers operating in Ontario and Quebec. Drivers who continually have low rates of fuel consumption will be studied to provide a model for training other drivers. The project will run until July 2010.

"This technology is a great tool to measure, in real time, the performance of professional drivers," said Claude Robert, chief executive officer of Groupe Robert. "We appreciate the funding provided by the Government of Canada for this technology that will help freight transportation companies, like Groupe Robert, to reduce fuel consumption costs and contribute to a better and healthier environment."

The Freight Technology Demonstration Fund generates cost-shared demonstrations to test and measure new and underused freight transportation technologies that reduce greenhouse gas and air pollution in Canadian conditions. It is part of Transport Canada's ecoFREIGHT Program, which aims to reduce the effects of freight transportation on human health and the environment by promoting environmentally sound technologies and best practices in the industry.

The ecoFREIGHT Program falls under the ecoTRANSPORT Strategy, which is part of the Government of Canada's plan to protect the environment and the health of Canadians, and to further Canada's economic prosperity.
