Government of Canada Invests in the 2009 Bombardier Lake Louise Winterstart World Cup

LAKE LOUISE, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Dec. 6, 2009) - The Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport), today announced that the Government of Canada will provide funding of $250,000 to Alpine Canada Alpin for the 2009 Bombardier Lake Louise Winterstart World Cup through Sport Canada's Hosting Program (http://www.pch.gc.ca/pgm/sc/pgm/hstng-eng.cfm).

"Our Government is proud to support the 2009 Lake Louise Winterstart World Cup," said Minister of State Lunn. "This annual event gives Canada the chance to host top athletes from around the world and is an outstanding opportunity to enjoy the highest level of alpine competition. This event is a good prelude to what Canadians can look forward to as our athletes prepare to compete in the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games."

The Lake Louise Winterstart is Canada's classic ski race, renowned internationally as the event that kicks off the men's and women's Alpine World Cup speed discipline season.

The Government of Canada believes that participation in sport is part of a healthy lifestyle and contributes to a healthy society. Events like the 2009 Bombardier Lake Louise Winterstart World Cup also stimulate the tourism industry and have positive repercussions on the local economy.

The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from the playground to the podium.
