Government of Canada Invests in Community Environmental Projects on Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and Haida Gwaii

VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - June 24, 2010) - The Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State for Sport and Member of Parliament for Saanich—Gulf Islands, on behalf of Canada's Environment Minister, the Honourable Jim Prentice, today announced funding from the EcoAction Community Funding Program for six new environmental projects in Victoria, British Columbia. In total, $253,316 in federal funding will support local action to reduce pollution, improve air and water quality, and protect wildlife and natural habitat.

"As part of the International Year of Biodiversity, I am pleased that federal funding will be provided to six, local environmental projects that will address climate change and promote energy and water conservation, protect seabirds in the Laskeek Bay area, improve water quality in Quamichan Lake, improve a management plan for Railway Grade Marsh, and educate residents about wildlife habitat," said Minister Lunn.

"This government is committed to addressing the environmental priorities of Canadians," added Minister Prentice. "We are proud to support community groups in British Columbia willing to take concrete action through on-the-ground environmental projects that will achieve a more sustainable Canada. Your actions, large or small, will help to protect the abundance and variety of life that is part of our natural heritage."

One group receiving funding is the City Green Solutions Society for their Building Blocks for Municipal Energy and Water Efficiency (Building Blocks) initiative. "City Green Solutions is working with municipalities, including the Capital Regional District of Greater Victoria, to better inform and involve the public in reducing their energy and water consumption," said Peter Sundberg, Executive Director, City Green Solutions Society. "We are pleased that Environment Canada's EcoAction Community Program is providing funds to help this important initiative."

The EcoAction Community Funding Program is a Government of Canada initiative that supports projects that rehabilitate, protect or enhance the natural environment, and builds the capacity of communities and individuals in support of a more sustainable Canada. The six projects announced today will assist locally-based, non-profit organizations in initiating actions that result in cleaner air, reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, cleaner water, and the protection of nature at the local community level.
