Government of Canada Invests in the Grasslands Regional Family and Community Support Services Society

BROOKS, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Oct. 12, 2009) - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, LaVar Payne, Member of Parliament (Medicine Hat), today announced funding for the Grasslands Regional Family and Community Support Services Society.

This funding will support "A Time to Remember," a centennial celebration in Brooks that will mark its incorporation as a village in 1910. Planned activities include guided historical tours, art displays, musical performances, and theatrical presentations depicting the history of Brooks.

"Local celebrations bring people of all ages and backgrounds together and contribute to building stronger communities," said Minister Moore. "I commend all the community volunteers on their great work in highlighting Brooks' local arts and heritage during such an important anniversary."

"I am very pleased to announce this funding to the Family and Community Support Services Society in partnership with the City of Brooks," said Mr. Payne. "This funding will assist in planning and organizing celebrations in recognition of the 100th anniversary of Brooks-a milestone in the history of our constituency. This is another example of our Government's actions to strengthen communities through celebrations of their history."

"The Grasslands Regional Family and Community Support Services Society is honoured to accept the Government of Canada's funding in partnership with the City of Brooks," said Noel Moriyama, Vice-Chair of the Grasslands Regional Family and Community Support Services Society and City of Brooks Councillor. "This funding will help the City of Brooks honour 100 years of history during next year's Centennial celebrations!"

The Grasslands Regional Family and Community Support Services Society is a local non-profit service agency that provides support services in Brooks and the surrounding villages.

The Government of Canada has provided funding of $26,000 through the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage (www.pch.gc.ca/pgm/dcap-bcah/index-eng.cfm) program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in activities that present local arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage.
