Government of Canada Invests in Seven Small Craft Harbours on Newfoundland's Northern Peninsula

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 15, 2007) - Seven fishing harbours on the Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland and Labrador will benefit from Government of Canada investments in safer, more modern facilities, the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, announced today.

"These harbours and wharves have been the backbone of the local economy for generations, providing the essential link for fish harvesters to bring ocean resources to market," said Minister Hearn. "This new federal funding will ensure they continue to serve the needs of coastal communities by providing more efficient, productive wharves and improved access and navigation in the harbours."

A total of $2,850,000 is going towards improvements at harbour facilities in River of Ponds, Port Au Choix, Barr'd Harbour, Conche, Forrester's Point, Black Duck Cove and Rocky Harbour.

These projects will be implemented by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, as part of its Small Craft Harbours Program, in cooperation with the local harbour authorities that manage and operate the facilities for the benefit of the local users. This close cooperation with clients allows the federal government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fishers.

Details of these projects can be found in the attached backgrounder.

DETAILS OF PROJECTS AT HARBOURS ON THE NORTHERN PENINSULA OF NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR

River of Ponds - The armourstone breakwater was damaged in a severe storm last fall. A repair project, to ensure a safe landing site at this harbour, will commence this year with completion expected next year.

Port Au Choix - The wharf reconstruction project at this harbour is currently underway and is expected to be completed this year. This project will alleviate a safety issue at the harbour.

Barr'd Harbour - To replace a deteriorated structure at the harbour and ensure the safety for all users, a wharf reconstruction project, which began in 2006, was recently completed this year. The project included the installation of a concrete deck and fenders.

Conche - Entering its second year, the wharf reconstruction project at this harbour is underway and is expected to be completed later this year. This structure will provide fish harvesters with a safer and more adequate landing facility.

Forrester's Point - The wharf extension project at this harbour has been recently completed, to ensure adequate berthage and safe conditions for harbour users. The project included the installation of a concrete deck and fenders.

A tender has been awarded for a basin and channel dredging project at Black Duck Cove. This project, which will ensure a safe access for vessel activity, is expected to be completed by late fall.

In addition, a dredging project at Rocky Harbour has been recently completed. This project provides safe conditions for vessels maneuvering in the basin area.
