Government of Canada Launches Action Plan to Make Federal Office Buildings More Environmentally Friendly

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - June 8, 2007) - The Honourable Michael M Fortier, Minister of Public Works and Government Services Canada and Minister responsible for the Montreal Region, today announced the Government of Canada is launching a three-year action plan to make its office buildings more environmentally friendly.

"Canada's New Government is helping ensure a healthier and cleaner environment for all Canadians," said Minister Fortier. "Over the next three years, we will assess the environmental performance of about 300 federal office buildings across the country. These assessments will help us improve our building management and monitor our progress over time."

Public Works and Government Services Canada recently signed a contract with the Building Owners and Managers Association of Canada (BOMA Canada) to use their "Go Green Plus" national environmental program for existing buildings to carry-out these assessments.

"BOMA Go Green Plus is a comprehensive, easy-to-use Web-based tool," said Deb Cross, Executive Vice President of BOMA Canada. "It helps assess how well a building is performing in six key environmental areas including energy and water use, resources (waste reduction and recycling), indoor environment (e.g., air quality) and environmental management."

"Canadians and our environment deserve strong action from government," noted Minister Fortier. "Our government is committed to protecting the environment by maintaining and operating its office buildings in an environmentally responsible manner and buying green products whenever possible. We will also continue to ensure new office buildings are constructed to meet the LEED Gold standard."

This announcement was made at the 2007 Salon national de l'environnement in Montreal, Quebec.
