Government of Canada to Participate in 2010 Veterans Administrations Ministerial Forum in New Zealand

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 29, 2010) - The Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of State (Agriculture), will represent the Government of Canada at the 2010 Veterans Administrations Ministerial Forum on February 4 and 5 in Wellington, New Zealand. It will be an opportunity for Canada to discuss Veterans' issues with its international counterparts including Australia and New Zealand.

"Honouring and providing services to Veterans is a shared goal around the world," said Minister Blackburn. "Our government has put programs in place to meet the needs of our traditional and modern-day Veterans, but challenges remain. By discussing these challenges with ministers from other countries, we can learn from each other and share best practices on how to address the needs of our Veterans."

The forum is an opportunity for ministers to update their colleagues on Veterans issues in their countries and to talk about common challenges. The theme of this year's forum is Modernizing Veterans' Legislation, specifically the challenge of developing legislation to meet the needs of an aging Veteran population and those of modern-day Veterans.

The Veterans Administrations Ministerial Forum evolved from the 2001 meeting of senior officials from Veterans Affairs departments which was held in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Since that time, member countries have made much progress in addressing common issues.
