Government of Canada Supports the Asociation Canadienne-Francaise de l'Ontario de Prescott Et Russell

ALFRED, ONTARIO --(Marketwire - June 23, 2009) - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, Pierre Lemieux, Member of Parliament (Glengarry-Prescott-Russell), today announced funding for the Association canadienne-francaise de l'Ontario (ACFO) de Prescott et Russell.

This support will help the Association carry out its French-language cultural and social programming for the French-speaking community of Prescott-Russell. The Association will also receive funding for the "Eveil a la francophonie sous tous ses angles" project. This project will give young people aged 12 to 35 a chance to learn about Ontario's Francophone communities through modules on history, arts, and culture.

"Our Government is taking concrete steps to promote and protect our linguistic duality, and we recognize the important role of the Association canadienne-francaise de l'Ontario de Prescott et Russell," said Minister Moore. "We are proud to support Francophone organizations in Ontario that contribute to the province's well-being."

"As Member of Parliament for Glengarry-Prescott-Russell, it is always a pleasure to deliver funding for important projets," said Mr. Lemieux. "Teaching history and culture to our young people is a key initiative that will contribute to their development. I wish ACFO de Prescott et Russell every success."

"ACFO will continue to work on its four priority areas: communication, Francophone affairs, community action, and especially youth," said Nathalie Ladouceur, President of ACFO de Prescott et Russell. "In fact, we have established excellent partnerships with several community organizations, including FAFO and JAPER, for projects like 'Heros de chez nous' and 'Eveil a la francophonie sous tous ses angles' that will be launched soon. As a group that aims to bring people together, ACFO intends to continue to work together with all those who share the same interests."

The Government of Canada has provided funding of $90,000 to the Association canadienne-francaise de l'Ontario de Prescott et Russell. Of this amount, $60,000 will go toward the organization's 2009-2011 programming, and $30,000 will go toward the "Eveil a la francophonie sous tous ses angles" project. This funding will be provided under the Community Life component of the Development of Official-Language Communities Program. This program of the Department of Canadian Heritage aims to foster the development of Canada's minority Anglophone and Francophone communities and enable them to participate fully in all aspects of Canadian life.
