Government of Canada Supports the Canadian Police Centre for Missing and Exploited Children in Their Efforts to Help Children in Haiti

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 7, 2010) - Pierre Poilievre, Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister and to the Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, on behalf of the Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety, today joined the Canadian Police Centre for Missing and Exploited Children to launch a one-month deployment of three of its members to Haiti in support of Haitian Nation Police efforts to protect children from sexual exploitation.

"The Government of Canada remains committed to the global fight against the sexual exploitation of children and we will continue to work with our partners such as the Canadian Police Centre for Missing and Exploited Children to address this terrible crime," said MP Poilievre. "This project, which is funded through the National Strategy for the Protection of Children from Sexual Exploitation on the Internet, is a reflection of that commitment."

"In support of the Haitian National Police (HNP), we are deploying a team of three members to Port-au-Prince in an effort to proactively assist the HNP in developing their capacity to protect children from sexual exploitation on the Internet," said RCMP Superintendent John Bilinski. "We will gather information that will enhance efforts to identify child victims from Haiti should images depicting their sexual abuse surface on the Internet."

Last year our Government announced a renewed commitment to work with our partners through the National Strategy for the Protection of Children from Sexual Exploitation on the Internet. This initiative has played an important role in supporting actions to crack down on sexual predators. The Government of Canada is investing $71 million over five years to protect children from online sexual exploitation.
