Government of Canada Announces $450,000 for Stratford Festival of Canada

STRATFORD, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - May 23, 2006) - The Government of Canada announces $450,000 in funding for the Stratford Festival of Canada's "Renewing the Stage for Excellence" project. This project will significantly enhance the Stratford Festival's technical environment and the theatre experience for audiences and artists. This announcement was made today by Gary Schellenberger, Member of Parliament (Perth-Wellington), on behalf of Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women.

"The Government of Canada is committed to investing in arts and culture," said Minister Oda. "Arts and culture investments make it possible for more Canadians to actively participate in cultural activities in communities across the country."

The "Renewing the Stage for Excellence" project will benefit the Stratford Festival by facilitating the purchase of a new musical sound system, a state-of-the-art lighting system, a high-intensity projector, and a new hearing-assistance system. These enhancements will allow the Festival to create more elaborate programming, address the current technical challenges faced by technicians and artists, and permit greater scope and quality in the Festival's creative design.

"This initiative will enrich Ontario's cultural life and will showcase the creative talent that can be found in this province," said Mr. Schellenberger.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage, through its Cultural Spaces Canada program. This program supports cultural infrastructure projects that increase access for Canadians to performing, visual, and media arts and also improves physical conditions for artistic creativity and innovation. Funding is also provided for the construction and renovation of arts and heritage facilities, for the purchase of specialized equipment, and for feasibility studies and projects to transform buildings into arts or heritage facilities.
