Government of Canada Announces Funding for Cenotaph and Memorial Restoration

MOUNT STEWART, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND--(Marketwire - Oct. 22, 2007) - The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, announced today, on behalf of the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, a contribution of up to $8,085 to The Royal Canadian Legion, Mount Stewart Branch #4. The funds, provided through Veterans Affairs Canada equals s Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program, will be used to help restore and conserve the Mount Stewart Cenotaph and historic cannon.

"Cenotaphs serve as places where communities can gather to honour local war heroes and remember those who did not return home," said Minister Thompson. "Supporting these memorials is one way that our government is ensuring that our Veterans are remembered in communities across the country."

The land upon which the cenotaph and accompanying cannon currently sit has recently been sold. Funds provided will be used to clean the monument and relocate it to the Hillsborough River Eco-Centre, where the cenotaph will be installed on a new base.

"It sometimes becomes necessary to relocate monuments like this one," said Minister MacKay. "No matter where the cenotaph resides though, its power is found in the symbolism assigned to it by those who gather to honour others. By moving the cenotaph to a new location, the citizens of Mount Stewart are demonstrating their commitment to continued remembrance."

The Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program helps communities across Canada to preserve the memory of those who have served our country. Through partnerships with community groups and local organizations, the cenotaphs and monuments honouring Veterans, war dead and significant events, are maintained with the standard of care and dignity that they deserve.
