Government of Canada Enhances Waterway Safety

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 22, 2010) - Canada's Transport Minister John Baird today announced that the Government of Canada has introduced regulatory changes that will give communities more tools to enhance safety at lakes, rivers and beaches. The changes, which are now in effect, will also reduce the red tape for approving sporting, recreational or public events in or near waterways.

"The Government of Canada is committed to helping local communities maintain the safest environment possible in and around lakes, rivers and beaches," said Baird. "These changes will give communities additional tools to promote safety in activities such as wake surfing, water-skiing, regattas and dragon boat races."

The changes to the Vessel Operation Restriction Regulations include:

  • a simpler application process for the approval of sporting, recreational or public events or activities;
  • a tool for communities to regulate wake surfing for the safety of all waterway users, in a similar way that communities can now regulate water-skiing; and
  • additional enforcement officers in Ontario and Quebec.

The regulatory changes were pre-published in the Canada Gazette, Part I, on October 10, 2009. A 30-day comment period followed. The Regulations Amending the Vessel Operation Restriction Regulations were published in the Canada Gazette, Part II, on March 17, 2010, and can be found at www.gazette.gc.ca/rp-pr/p1/2009/2009-10-10/html/reg6-eng.html.
