Government of Canada Funds Restoration Project in Northern Alberta

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 8, 2009) - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, and the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Labour, announced today federal government support for a project in northern Alberta to honour Veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #37 (High Prairie) is receiving funding for the restoration of the High Prairie Cenotaph. Built in 1967 and located in front of the Legion building, the cenotaph is dedicated to the local war dead of the First and Second World Wars. Funding provided by Veterans Affairs Canada's Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program will help to replace the current plaque with a new one made of bronze.

"Our military history is part of who we are as a nation, and the service men and women who served for the freedoms we enjoy today must be remembered," said Minister Thompson. "Memorials represent sacrifice and honour, and they carry on the importance of remembrance for future generations."

"Throughout our history, the courage of our remarkable men and women in uniform came to define the Canada we know today - a nation strong, free and proud," said Minister Ambrose. "Thanks to this funding, the people of High Prairie will be able to honour their fallen heroes at a fully restored memorial at the High Prairie Legion building."

The Government of Canada is providing more than $190,000 to 19 community-led cenotaph and monument restoration projects across the country through the Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program. Applications to the Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program are accepted throughout the year. Non-profit groups and other organizations interested in restoring local memorials may be eligible for funding.
