Government of Canada Funds Restoration Projects in Southwestern Ontario

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 15, 2009) - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, and the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, announced today federal government support for projects in southwestern Ontario to honour Veterans and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

"Monuments and cenotaphs serve an important role in our remembrance because they are a permanent symbol of the pride and gratitude Canadians share for our nation's truest heroes," said Minister Thompson. "It is important that we maintain the glory of our cenotaphs and memorials, and in doing so, inspire a renewed sense of remembrance within the community. This is why our government continues to provide support for cenotaph and monument restoration in communities across the country."

The Thames Valley District School Board will receive funding for the restoration of the Drumbo Cenotaph. The Trinity United Church of Beamsville will receive funding for the restoration of the Trinity United Church Memorial Window.

"These memorials reflect the appreciation, held by each community, for our local heroes who served," said Minister Finley. "With support from this government, these monuments will be enjoyed for generations to come."

The Government of Canada is providing more than $274,465 to 29 community-led cenotaph and monument restoration projects across the country through the Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program. Through these partnerships, cenotaphs and monuments honouring Veterans, Canada's war dead, and significant military events, are maintained with the standard of care and dignity they deserve.

Applications to the Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program are accepted throughout the year. Non-profit groups and other organizations interested in restoring local memorials may be eligible for funding.
