Government of Canada Launches New Appointments Website

Provides unprecedented information on Governor-In-Council Appointment Process

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 21, 2007) - Peter Van Loan, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Minister for Democratic Reform, announced today the Government of Canada has launched a new, comprehensive website to provide Canadians with information on the Governor-in-Council appointments process.

"Our Government believes that information on the appointments process should be available to all Canadians," said Minister Van Loan. "The new website will increase transparency, improve accountability and provide Canadians with unprecedented access to information regarding appointments."

The renewed website provides Canadians with timely access to:

- a listing of new and ongoing/future Governor-in-Council vacancies;

- information on more than 200 organizations which have Governor-in-Council appointments;

- an overview of the Governor-in-Council appointments process; and

- key reference documents applicable to Governor-in-Council appointees.

"A Governor-in-Council appointment is a unique opportunity to contribute to building a better Canada," continued Minister Van Loan. "Now that information on the appointments process is easy to find, we encourage Canadians from across the country to visit the website site to find out how they can make a difference."

Currently, more than 2000 Canadians are serving on over 200 boards, commissions and agencies all across Canada. Through strong leadership, expertise and experience, they are contributing to areas as diverse as polar research, environmental protection, the arts, trade and international development.
