Government of Canada Promotes Yukon Business Opportunities

WHITEHORSE, YUKON--(Marketwire - March 12, 2010) - The Canadian Northern Development Agency (CanNor) announced support today for a new marketing project designed to attract investment and promote the Yukon across Canada and around the world.

Senator Daniel Lang, on behalf of the Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians and Minister of CanNor made the announcement today.

CanNor will provide $50,000 over two years through its Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) Program to assist with the creation of a Virtual Tradeshow that will showcase Yukon business and investment opportunities on DVD.

"National and international business communities are beginning to discover the promising investment and lifestyle opportunities that our Northern communities have to offer," said Senator Lang. "Innovative marketing activities such as this translate into real dollars on the ground and have a direct effect on the local and regional economy."

"This initiative is an excellent example of coordinated economic development planning and marketing", said the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister Responsible for the North and Minister of Health. "It involves the cooperation of federal departments, municipal government and private business to achieve results that will benefit the whole community."

The City of Whitehorse will use the funds to create a new promotional segment to be added to an existing DVD that markets the city as an excellent place to live, work and invest. The Virtual Tradeshow segment will highlight reasons to do business in Whitehorse and provide in-depth profiles of successful local companies. The updated DVD will be translated into multiple languages and sent to potential investors in countries such as China, Japan, France and Germany.

"Whitehorse has always been a really great place to live and work but the rest of the world simply didn't know about us," said Mayor Bev Buckway, Mayor of Whitehorse. "We created "Whitehorse the Right climate for business" to show the World the competitive advantages of doing business here. Our objective is to grow and expand our business community and with that always in mind we asked businesses that were ready to export or looking for investment to come on board in a virtual tradeshow format"

This federal investment was made possible through CanNor's SINED program. With a focus on long-term economic development, SINED funds projects that enhance economic infrastructure, build the knowledge base in key economic sectors, develop capacity, and promote economic diversification.

SINED falls under the mandate of CanNor in Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. CanNor is responsible for coordinating and delivering federal economic development activities in the three territories and for policy, research, and advocacy.
