Government of Canada Supports International Conference on Anti-Semitism

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 17, 2010) - The Government of Canada is demonstrating its commitment to address anti-Semitism by pledging financial support to the Parliamentary Centre for the upcoming Ottawa Conference on Combating Anti-Semitism, Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney announced today.

"Canada strives to be an international leader in fighting the pernicious evil of anti-Semitism," Minister Kenney said. "By supporting this conference, the Government of Canada is taking action to engage the global community in the struggle against hatred."

The Parliamentary Centre is a non-partisan and not-for-profit organization devoted to improving the effectiveness of representative assemblies around the world. As facilitator, the Parliamentary Centre will receive a contribution of $451,280 through Inter-Action, Canada's new Multiculturalism Grants and Contributions Program.

"At the inaugural conference of the Inter-parliamentary Coalition for Combating Anti-Semitism (ICCA) in London in February 2009, Canadian Parliamentarians committed to hosting the 2010 conference," said Amelita Armit, President and CEO of the Parliamentary Centre. "Acting as facilitator for this conference supports the Centre's objective to provide a forum for Parliamentarians to participate in dialogues and exchanges on matters of interest to them."

Other partners supporting and participating in the Ottawa Conference on Combating Anti-Semitism include the ICCA, the Canadian Parliamentary Coalition to Combat Anti-Semitism (CPCCA) and Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada.

The Ottawa Conference on Combating Anti-Semitism will take place November 7-9, 2010 and will bring together Parliamentarians, experts and dignitaries from around the world to discuss the global phenomenon of anti-Semitism and develop mechanisms for combating it. Additional information about the conference will be available in the months ahead.
