Government of Canada Supports Remembrance Programming in Schools

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Oct. 18, 2007) - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, today announced a contribution of up to $2,500 to Mountainview School and up to $1,700 to Cite des Prairies School, both located in Montreal. The funds, provided through Veterans Affairs Canada's Community Engagement Partnership Fund, will support a year-long program in which students will learn about the important role Canadian service men and women have played in protecting peace around the world.

"It is vital for students to understand the role Canadian Veterans have played, and the role Canadian Forces members continue to play, to ensure our peace and freedom," said Minister Thompson. "These programs are great examples of how students can learn this important lesson through meeting Veterans and hearing first-hand accounts of their lives during war."

The We Will Continue to Remember Them program, held at Mountainview, and the Path to Peace program, held at Cite des Prairies, will give students a better awareness of both Veterans and still serving members of the Canadian Forces. Activities for the programs include visits by Veteran guest speakers from local Legion branches, a trip to the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre, and a mural created by students which will illustrate Veterans and the Canadian Forces over the course of Canadian history.

The Community Engagement Partnership Fund provides funding to non-profit groups, educational institutions and other organizations delivering remembrance activities and events. Administered through Veterans Affairs Canada's Canada Remembers program, contributions are made throughout the year and encompass both national and community-based projects.
