Government of Canada Supports the Association des Francophones de Kitchener-Waterloo

WATERLOO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 8, 2010) - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, Peter Braid, Member of Parliament (Kitchener–Waterloo), today announced funding for the Association des Francophones de Kitchener–Waterloo.

"Our Government recognizes the important role that francophone groups play in strengthening our linguistic duality," said Minister Moore. "We are proud to support the Association des Francophones de Kitchener–Waterloo and its contributions to the residents of the region."

The Association administers events throughout the year that support the linguistic and cultural needs of the Franco-Ontarian community in the Kitchener–Waterloo region. It also represents regional francophone interests at various levels of government, and raises awareness about French language, culture, and services in Kitchener–Waterloo.

"Canada's two official languages are a fundamental part of our national identity," said Mr. Braid. "This organization promotes the French language, deepens our understanding of francophone culture within our community, and strengthens Canada."

"We are proud and pleased to learn that the Government of Canada is renewing its confidence in us for the 2010-2011 year of AFKW programming" said Yves Béretta, President of the Association des Francophones de Kitchener–Waterloo. "We thank you, and we will continue to offer new cultural and educational activities to the francophone community of Kitchener–Waterloo."

The Government of Canada has provided funding of $20,000 under the Development of Official-Language Communities Program (http://www.pch.gc.ca/eng/1267730127653) of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program aims to enhance the vitality of Canada's official-language minority communities and enable them to fully participate in all aspects of Canadian life.
