Government of Canada Supports the Atlantic Smile Theatre

CHARLOTTETOWN, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND--(Marketwire - Jan. 25, 2008) - The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs announced today a contribution of up to $5,000 to the Atlantic Chapter of Smile Theatre. The funds, provided through Veterans Affairs Canada's Community Engagement Partnership Fund, will support the Theatre's production of Billy Bishop Goes To War.

"Experiencing the stories of our Veterans through live theatre gives audiences a greater appreciation of the challenges our service men and women faced and the sacrifices they made during the First World War," said Minister Thompson. "This musical production provides a unique and powerful way to experience the stories of our Veterans."

The Atlantic Chapter of Smile Theatre, a non-profit charitable organization, will perform its special concert version of Billy Bishop Goes To War at various seniors homes and care facilities across Prince Edward Island from January 14 to 26, 2008. A special public performance will be held at the Seniors Active Living Centre. Local Veterans and youth will be invited to attend the show and participate in a question and answer session with the performers following the production.

"This project is a great way to teach First World War history through performance," said Minister Thompson. "By attending this concert, Islanders of all ages will honour all men and women who have served Canada."

The Community Engagement Partnership Fund provides funding to non-profit groups, educational institutions and other organizations delivering remembrance activities and events. Administered through Veterans Affairs Canada"s Canada Remembers program, contributions are made throughout the year and encompass both national and community-based projects.
