Government of Canada Supports the Community Health and Social Services Network 'CHSSN'

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - May 12, 2005) - Minister of Transport and Political Lieutenant for Quebec Jean-C. Lapierre, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $100,000 in funding for the Community Health and Social Services Network (CHSSN). The funds will allow the organization to update a survey on the kinds of experience that members of Quebec's English-speaking community have had with health and social services.

"It is essential that members of Quebec's English-speaking population can take advantage of quality services in their language," said Minister Lapierre. "I am certain that this project will give us a clearer understanding of the state of our health and social services and help us improve access to them."

"Supporting organizations that work on behalf of linguistic minorities is a priority for our Government," said Minister Frulla. "The CHSSN plays a key role in Quebec's English-speaking community by contributing in many ways to its members' development, and I am pleased that we are able to support one of its innovative projects."

The study funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage will, among other things, allow the CHSSN to develop and implement a community-health promotion strategy for English-speaking communities. Since 2000, the CHSSN has helped create strategic ties and partnerships to improve access to health and social services for members of Quebec's official-language minority.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Development of Official-Language Communities Program.

Funding for this initiative was provided for in the February 2005 federal Budget.
