Government of Canada Supports the Festival Place Society

SHERWOOD PARK, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - June 12, 2009) - On behalf of the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, Tim Uppal, Member of Parliament (Edmonton-Sherwood Park), today announced funding for the Festival Place Society.

This funding will be used to support the Festival Place 2009-2010 Presentation Series, which will provide performing arts presentations to the citizens of Sherwood Park and Strathcona County. As a multidisciplinary series, the season will showcase artists in a wide range of genres, including comedy, live theatre, and classical, jazz, folk, and popular/cabaret music.

"Our Government is proud to support Festival Place, which provides local residents with access to diverse artistic performances," said Minister Moore.

"The Society provides a great service to the people of Sherwood Park through their presentation of arts and culture," said Mr. Uppal. "I am very pleased to announce that our Government is providing support for the Festival Place Society."

"The support of the Government of Canada for our professional series has allowed us to move to a new level of excellence in our presentation of performing artists," said Gavin Farmer, General Manager, Festival Place. "The response of our community to these performance opportunities has been outstanding, with audience attendance growing in recent seasons."

Since opening in 1994, Festival Place has welcomed amateur and professional artists to its theatre stage and has hosted many community activities and events. For 15 years, Festival Place has been delivering its Presentation Series featuring performances by leading local, regional, national, and international artists. The 2009-2010 programming will build upon previous successes and focus on a wide range of artistic experiences ranging from family programming to world music.

The Government of Canada has provided $60,000 in funding through the Arts Presentation Canada program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program gives Canadians increased access to the diversity and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences.
