Government of Canada Takes Another Step in Rehabilitating the Parliamentary Precinct

GATINEAU, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Oct. 16, 2009) - The Government of Canada has awarded a contract to PCL Constructors Canada Inc. of Nepean, Ontario, to carry out interior renovations and construction at 1 Rideau Canal in Ottawa.

The $11,493,859 (GST excluded) project, funded by Canada's Economic Action Plan, will see the construction of four parliamentary committee rooms and ancillary space. This will allow the West Block to be completely vacated four years earlier than planned and advance the renovation schedule.

"The Parliament Precinct is not just a collection of buildings. It's not just brick and mortar; it's a national symbol," said Minister Paradis. "This rehabilitation will ensure that these iconic buildings, so tied to our national history, will be here for generations to come."

"This is just one more example of how this Government is investing in infrastructure right across the country," added Minister Paradis. "We are turning our short-term challenges into long-term strengths, creating jobs today while building a lasting legacy of sound infrastructure for the future."

The work on the building at 1 Rideau Canal will begin in the fall of 2009 and be completed by fall 2010.

Through the Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada is investing $12 billion in new infrastructure funding for roads, bridges, broadband Internet access, electronic health records, laboratories and border crossings across Canada.
