Government of Canada and Winnipeg Support Local Youth Centre

Project will create jobs and promote a healthy lifestyle for youth

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA--(Marketwire - Feb. 26, 2010) - Today, the Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety and Member of Parliament for Provencher, and City of Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz announced that the Government of Canada and the City of Winnipeg are each investing close to $3.2 million in the construction of a new Centre for Youth Excellence in Winnipeg, which will promote an active and healthy lifestyle for youth.

"Our government is pleased to partner with the City of Winnipeg and Youth for Christ (YFC) to make this new youth centre a reality," said Minister Toews. "This is another example of government being able to successfully partner with an organization to fill a void in the community. I applaud YFC for their perseverance and dedication to this project, which will have a positive impact on Winnipeg's youth."

"The Centre for Youth Excellence will be a shining example of the positive opportunities we can create in Winnipeg when the private sector steps up to the plate to partner with governments to invest in the future of our young people," said Mayor Katz. "As Mayor, it has been my focus to work with Council to ensure we are investing in positive healthy opportunities for youth across the community and I want to thank all of our private and public partners for sharing my vision to build a city of opportunity."

The funding will go toward the construction of a new community services facility that will house an indoor park for skateboarders; a drop-in centre; a job skills and training centre; a counseling centre; a dance and performing arts studio; a fitness centre; gymnasium space for floor hockey, volleyball, basketball, and soccer; a climbing wall; and a multipurpose theatre.

"We believe this new centre will play a very significant role in providing the youth of Winnipeg with constructive alternatives for their discretionary time, giving them a place where they will feel safe, cared for, supported and welcome," said John Courtney, YFC Executive Director. "YFC is especially grateful to Minister Toews and Mayor Katz for their vision and leadership, which made this project possible."

"CentreVenture welcomes the Centre for Youth Excellence to the revitalization of Main Street and we look forward to working with YFC, the youth of the area and the community to bring this important development to fruition," said Ross McGowan, President and CEO of CentreVenture Development Corporation. "Consultation with area stakeholders will ensure that the programs offered by the Centre will reflect the needs of a broad range of youth in a supportive, accessible and respectful manner."

The total eligible project costs are over $9.5 million, with the federal and municipal governments each providing one-third of the costs, up to $3.2 million each. The project proponent will contribute the remaining one-third funding, as well as other project costs. The Government of Canada's funding comes from the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, announced in Canada's Economic Action Plan.

The federal $4 billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund provides support to provincial, territorial and municipal construction-ready infrastructure projects that can be completed by March 31, 2011.
