Governor General Meets With the President of the United Mexican States

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 7, 2009) -

Their Excellencies the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, Governor General of Canada, and her husband Jean-Daniel Lafond met today with His Excellency Felipe Calderon Hinojosa, President of the United Mexican States as part of their State visit, from December 6 to 9, 2009.

At Los Pinos in Mexico City, Their Excellencies were welcomed with military honours during an official ceremony. The Governor General and the President then met for an hour to discuss bilateral relations, Canada's engagements in the region, security, economic cooperation and people to people linkage. The Governor General highlighted how important Mexico is to Canada in addition to being an indispensable economic partner:

"On the occasion of this State visit, we celebrate the friendship between our two people, but also the co-operation and relationships that exist between our democratic and academic institutions, and our civil organizations. President Calderon and I discussed the importance of strengthening our ties and of working together to better protect the security of our countries and the entire continent," the Governor General stated.

Governor General to address the Senate of the United Mexican States

December 8, 2009, at 12 p.m. (Central Standard Time)

The Governor General will meet with Senator Carlos Naverrete Ruiz, President of the Senate, and the leaders of the directive board, as well as with other political parties present in the Senate, followed by a ceremony, where she will address the chamber in full.

About the State visits to Mexico, Guatemala and Costa Rica

At the request of the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada, the Governor General and Mr. Jean-Daniel Lafond will undertake State visits to the United Mexican States, from December 6 to 9; to the Republic of Guatemala, from December 9 to 12; and to the Republic of Costa Rica, from December 12 to 15, 2009. The Minister of State Foreign Affairs (Americas), Peter Kent, will be a member of the official delegation for the State visits to Mexico and Guatemala.
