Governor General of Canada: Statement

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - April 28, 2008) -

Canada is greatly admired around the world for so many reasons. One reason in particular is the unsurpassed generosity and social commitment of Canadians. We believe in helping one another and in reaching out to those most in need; we are always ready to respond in times of crisis, to jump in and lend a hand whenever and wherever we are needed. From one end of this country to the other, the number of volunteers is extraordinary-thousands upon thousands of individuals who give wholeheartedly of their time, energy and knowledge, asking nothing in return.

To each and every one of you, I say thank you. Your determination to take action and your initiatives to ensure our collective well-being are an inspiration. You are breaking down solitudes, a theme that is dear to my heart. You are surmounting cultural, linguistic and generational barriers. You are eliminating prejudices and bringing Canadians together.

During this National Volunteer Week, let us celebrate the efforts of all those who often work in the shadows, who have an abiding concern for others and a profound desire to help build an even more just, more respectful and more harmonious society. These efforts are proof that great things can happen at any age, that solidarity exists, and above all, that indifference can be overcome.
