Governor General to Stay in the City of Quebec in Mid-September

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 11, 2009) - Their Excellencies the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, Governor General of Canada, and Mr. Jean-Daniel Lafond will be at the Residence of the Governor General at the Citadelle of Quebec, from September 14 to 18, 2009.

During her stay at the second official residence, the Governor General will meet with soldiers injured in Afghanistan. This will be an opportunity for her to thank them for their efforts and their important contributions to ensuring security, justice and freedom in that troubled region of the world.

A series of activities will also provide the Governor General with opportunities to speak with students, meet researchers with an expertise on the Far North, present a number of honours and welcome new ambassadors to Canada.

Monday, September 14

11 a.m.

Armed Forces Council meeting

The Citadelle

As commander-in-chief of the Canadian Forces, the Governor General will hold a meeting with the Armed Forces Council and will then present scrolls to the newly promoted generals and admirals.

Visit to the Institut de readaptation en deficience physique de Quebec

Her Excellency will meet with injured soldiers who are currently receiving care at the Institut and those who have previously stayed there. This organization, recognized as a university institute, offers accommodation, rehabilitation and social integration services, as well as escort and family support services.

Honours presentation ceremony

Residence of the Governor General at the Citadelle of Quebec

The Governor General will present 24 honours: ten Decorations for Bravery; two Police Exemplary Service Medals; eight Corrections Exemplary Service Medals; one Emergency Medical Services Exemplary Service Medal; one Peace Officer Exemplary Service Medal; one Governor General Academic Medal; and one Governor General's Caring Canadian Award.

Presentation of credentials

Residence of the Governor General at the Citadelle of Quebec

Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, Governor General of Canada, will receive the credentials of one new high commissioner and three new ambassadors.

Youth discussion at Ecole secondaire Vanier

700 Wilfrid-Hamel Boulevard

The Governor General will deliver a short address to start the discussion with 200 students from Vanier secondary school, as well as those from the Boudreau and Jean-de-Brebeuf schools. The topic of discussion will address the power of youth to use sports and arts to help build peace and solidarity in their neighbourhoods.

Visit to the Centre de la francophonie des Ameriques

Their Excellencies will be greeted by Jean-Louis Roy, Chairman of the Centre's board of directors, and Michel Robitaille, Chief Executive Officer, before proceeding on a tour of the premises. The Centre de la francophonie des Ameriques helps promote and develop a forward-looking francophone community against a backdrop of cultural diversity, by fostering exchanges, partnerships and the development of francophone networks.

Visit to the Comptoir Le Grenier

235 Saint-Joseph Street, Levis

The Governor General will visit this non-profit organization that provides, with respect and dignity, food to people experiencing hardships. The Comptoir Le Grenier provides approximately 250 meals each day. Every week, more than 3000 people take advantage of the food services offered by the centre, such as the community grocery store and soup kitchen.

Discussion at the Centre d'etudes nordiques

Universite Laval

The Governor General will meet with researchers from the Centre d'etudes nordiques (CEN) to learn more about their current research projects. Created in 1961, the CEN is Universite Laval's oldest research centre. Its mission is to contribute to the sustainable development of northern regions by improving our understanding of environmental changes and their repercussions.

Her Excellency will meet with members of the Chambre de commerce de Quebec, which is celebrating its bicentennial, and which is the second-oldest chamber of commerce in Canada (the centre in Halifax being the oldest).
