Governor General's Itinerary for the Dominican Republic

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 8, 2010) - At the request of the prime minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, Her Excellency Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, accompanied by her husband, His Excellency Jean-Daniel Lafond, will visit the Dominican Republic on March 10, 2010. 

Their Excellencies will then visit the Dominican Republic to strengthen the relationship between the Republic and Canada and to recognize the Dominicans' leadership in reacting to the Haitian crisis.

The delegation accompanying Their Excellencies will consist of: Denyse Côté, professor and researcher at the Université du Québec en Outaouais and director of the Observatoire sur le développement régional et l'analyse différenciée selon les sexes (ORÉGAND); and Mireille Mathieu, vice-rector for International Relations at the Université de Montréal and designated vice-rector for the AUF (Agence universitaire de la francophonie).

Round table with representatives from civil society
Their Excellencies will take part in a discussion with representatives from civil society on the relationship between Canada and the Dominican Republic.

Roundtable with Leading Members of the Community
Their Excellencies will meet with leading members of the Canadian community and Dominicans who have contributed to furthering bilateral relations between the two countries during an event hosted by the Ambassador of Canada to the Dominican Republic.

Meeting with the President of the Dominican Republic
Their Excellencies will meet with His Excellency Leonel Fernandez, President of the Dominican Republic, to discuss the two countries' relationship, as well as the efforts made by Dominicans to assist their neighbours after the earthquake in Haiti.

Their Excellencies will be the guests of honour at a lunch hosted by the President of the Dominican Republic, His Excellency Leonel Fernandez, and the First Lady, Margarita Cordero de Fernandez.

Visit to the Life and Hope Children's Home orphanage
Their Excellencies will meet children—many of whom are originally from Haiti—during their visit to this orphanage.

Round table on the Artibonite River rehabilitation project
Their Excellencies will meet with leaders of the Artibonite project, which is helping to rehabilitate the Artibonite river watershed in the region bordering Haiti and the Dominican Republic and strengthen the binational dialogue.
