Gowalla Reveals Version 3
Brand New User Experience, Faster Check-ins, Expanded Sharing Features Make Gowalla 3 the Most Dynamic Location Application Available Today
AUSTIN, TX--(Marketwire - December 2, 2010) - Gowalla (www.gowalla.com), a social network that inspires people to keep up with friends, share the places they go and discover the extraordinary in the world around them, today unveiled Gowalla 3, its most dynamic application to date. Gowalla 3 has not only been re-designed and re-built from the ground up to showcase a host of new and improved features, it represents a new standard of interoperability for location-based services, allowing Gowalla users to share and keep up with friends on other services like Facebook Places, Twitter, Foursquare and Tumblr.
Incorporating community feedback and a vision for making Gowalla the best service for encouraging people to discover the extraordinary, Gowalla 3 was built with three priorities in mind -- providing a richer service that goes beyond simply checking in, adding more magic to each and every check-in and bringing real, tangible value to our ever growing community.
"Today marks a bold and innovative step forward for Gowalla. Since our launch nearly two years ago, Gowalla has led the way in designing the best service for sharing and discovering places and events with your friends," said Josh Williams, Gowalla CEO and co-founder. "By providing deeper connections with other location-based services such as Facebook Places and Foursquare, we're not only connecting friends across these different services, we're continuing to provide a rich and unparalleled user experience."
Easier, Faster Check-in
The combination of evolving smart phone technology, improved battery life and smarter interface design brings a nearly instant available list of nearby places (including those you check in at most frequently) the moment the Check In button is tapped. Most notably, the Check In button is now front and center at nearly all times within the application.
In addition to providing easy sharing of check-ins to Facebook Places and Twitter, Gowalla 3 has also incorporated the ability to share check-ins with Foursquare and Tumblr, all from one screen, giving users a centralized way to connect with friends.
Notes & Highlights
Another major addition to Gowalla 3 is the new Notes feature, which lets anyone leave a digital note for a friend -- a short message they'll receive upon checking in at a specific location. From simple "congratulations" messages to a suggestion on a favorite food to a reminder for yourself, Notes lets you connect with your friends, family and loved ones in a creative way. We've also taken the popular Highlights feature used by thousands of people at Gowalla.com -- including people's favorite places for the Best Live Music, the Best Slice of Pizza, and much more, 18 categories in all -- and incorporated it into the mobile application.
Adding Real-world Value
Gowalla Passport Holders across the globe all use the service in different and creative ways, ranging from keeping a digital diary of the places they've been and experiences they have had, helping keep up with friends and family, or scoring deals and offers from their favorite businesses. By bringing photos inline to the Activity Feed, making the addition of new Spots (and flagging of duplicates) easier, and providing a Universal Activity Feed that shows check-ins from your friends on Gowalla, Facebook Places, Foursquare and Tumblr, we're making Gowalla an easy-to-use social utility for discovering the everyday, and extraordinary, around you.
Additionally, as Gowalla has recently rolled out the ability for businesses to claim their Spot and provide customized offers to the marketplace, Passport Holders will begin to see "Featured" Spots more often and discover fresh opportunities to interact with their favorite places to visit, dine, or shop.
Evolved User Experience
Gowalla 3 (initially on the iPhone platform only), also incorporates a completely new browsing experience for Friends and Photos, the option to bookmark your favorite spots for easy perusal and reference, and a smoother look and feel to the overall application. The Gowalla Passport has also been improved, with Photos, Trips, Items and Activity made even more accessible than previous versions.
Most recently, Gowalla and Disney Parks announced that they were teaming up to deliver a new and innovative way to experience Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts, with the launch of a number of custom pages at Gowalla.com, hundreds of Custom Passport Stamps for locations within Disney Parks, and creative executions of the existing Trips feature. These experiences will be made even more vivid and memorable with Gowalla 3, with inline photos that can be taken on the spot or uploaded from your mobile phone, streamlined Trips, access to special items, and more.
Gowalla 3 is now available from the App Store or via iTunes. More information, including a full list of features, can be found on iTunes or by visiting www.gowalla.com/iphone.
