Graham Hawkes, Internationally Renowned Ocean Engineer/Inventor, to Speak at The Northern California Underwater Photographic Society Meeting, Friday, September 8, 2006

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- August 28, 2006 -- The Northern California Underwater Photographic Society ( proudly presents a very special speaking engagement by Graham Hawkes, Friday, September 8, 2006, 8:00 p.m. Graham Hawkes is an internationally renowned ocean engineer/inventor who has been responsible for the design of a significant percentage of all manned (and more than 300 remote) underwater vehicles built for research or industry worldwide.

Graham Hawkes is currently the President of Hawkes Ocean Technologies (HOT), which was founded with his wife, Karen, in 1996 to develop innovative sub-sea exploration technologies. An award-winning design and engineering "skunkworks," HOT's projects include: Deep Flight winged submersibles; Wet Flight, a revolutionary underwater filming platform; and a mock escape sub for the film, "Sphere."

Graham's Deep Flight project, a state of the art, two-person underwater flight trainer, purpose-built to fully develop the potential for underwater flight and for economical, long-range exploration, started in the late 1980s as a program to explore the ocean's deepest depth of 36,000 feet. In order to accomplish this, Graham's submersibles had to sprout wings and fly down. When he built and tested the Deep Flight I prototype in 1996, he realized that underwater flight was not only incredibly exciting, but it opened many doors for new explorations, discoveries and adventures. HOT is currently developing a revolutionary new sub-sea technology under a NASA grant and the Deep Flight 3 winged submersible for private clients (

Graham's submersibles have been featured on television and film, including, James Bond's "For Your Eyes Only," the IMAX ride-film, "Dolphins: The Ride," a BBC/Discovery Channel Special on the Bermuda Triangle, and James Cameron's 3-D IMAX film, "Aliens of the Deep." His subs have also been featured on National Geographic Television, Discovery Channel, NBC, Dateline NBC, and countless other international television programs. Mr. Hawkes currently holds the world record for the deepest solo dive of 3,000 feet, which he achieved while test piloting his Deep Rover submersible.

Graham Hawkes' speaking engagement is Friday, September 8, 2006, at 8:00 p.m. Location: New Vision United Methodist Church, 450 Chadbourne Avenue, Millbrae, CA 94030. Cost for first-time visitors is FREE. For more info on attending, directions or membership info, please visit
