Great Lakes Grain Launches First Co-Operative Based "Crop Assessment Tour"

CHATHAM, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 18, 2010) - Great Lakes Grain is pleased to announce the launch of the "We know markets - Crop Assessment Tour 2010," the first of its size ever attempted by a farmer-owned co-operative in Canada.

Great Lakes Grain in partnership with AGRIS Co-operative and FS PARTNERS will conduct the Crop Assessment Tour over three days August 25 to August 27. This comprehensive tour's focus will be primarily to evaluate and provide corn and soybean market intelligence across southwestern and central Ontario for their co-operative farmer-owners.

"Recording agronomic observations, including collecting yield data will also be a key part of the Crop Assessment Tour's objective," says Great Lakes Grain marketing development manager Don Kabbes. "Information gathered will assist us so we can help farmers in growing and selling their crops throughout the marketing cycle," added Kabbes.

Approximately 40 agronomy staff from AGRIS Co-operative and FS PARTNERS will conduct the field inspections during the Crop Assessment Tour under the direction of Dale Cowan, senior agronomist for Southern Co-operative Services and Don McLean, agronomist for FS PARTNERS. "Crop scouting is a discovery process, it reduces surprises and provides learning opportunities for all of our participants," said Cowan.

The agronomy team will travel by bus visiting pre-selected corn and soybean fields, providing crucial scouting and agronomic observations, including plant populations, ear sizes on corn, pod and bean counts on soybeans for yield estimates across southwestern and central Ontario. The data collected will be compiled with the final results being shared with agronomy and grain marketing staff from all three co-operative companies and their farmer-owners.
