Green Globe Certification Partners With Atmosfair for Carbon Offsets

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - April 19, 2010) -  Green Globe Certification

Green Globe Certification, the leading certification program for sustainability in travel and tourism, announces a new partnership with Atmosfair for carbon offsetting.

Atmosfair's carbon offset program invests funds in 100% CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) Gold Standard projects which include: solar energy substitution for diesel power generation in India; efficient wood fuel stoves in Nigeria; and small hydro power generation in Honduras, among many others.

Green Globe Certification CEO, Mr. Guido Bauer, said, "It is imperative that travel and tourism take action regarding carbon pollution. We already recognise that the travel industry is both a significant contributor to greenhouse gases and at the same time highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Carbon dioxide emissions from the industry's transport, accommodation and other tourism activities are estimated to account for between 4% and 6% of total global emissions. If action is not taken, tourism's contribution to CO2 emissions could grow by 150% in the next 30 years, based on UNWTO tourism market forecasts."

Atmosfair CEO, Dr. Dietrich Brockhagen, said, "Today, players from the industry and clients around the world ask for climate solutions, when it comes to investment and business decisions. We assist the industry in finding cost effective carbon abatement solutions. While the investment cycles in the hotel, aviation and shipping sector are long, there are good opportunities to combine climate protection and cost savings. Carbon offsetting plays a vital role for those carbon emissions that cannot be reduced otherwise."

Carbon offsetting is an essential criterion for tourism businesses to be awarded certification by Green Globe Certification. Along with all efforts made to reduce a business's carbon footprint, the remaining carbon liability should be offset by investing in projects that are recognized as CDM Gold Standard.
