Groundbreaking Study by Independent Analyst a Wake-Up Call for Business Intelligence Market as Users Tip Scales in Favor of "Emerging" Vendors Like PivotLink

Rankings Underscore PivotLink's Commanding Lead Among Pure SaaS BI Players With Users Lauding Value, Support and 100% Recommendation

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - May 3, 2010) - Findings from the new "Wisdom of Crowds" Business Intelligence Market Study™ by Dresner Advisory Services, LLC reveal a dramatic shift away from traditional on-premise Business Intelligence (BI) software in favor of solutions from "Emerging" BI vendors, such as PivotLink. The study of 457 business and Information Technology (IT) professionals ranks 15 leading companies' products, with PivotLink users confirming a 100% recommendation and other top ratings as compared to peers and the overall sample.

The unsponsored study was led by industry expert, author and former Gartner Research Fellow Howard Dresner, one of the foremost thought leaders in Business Intelligence and Performance Management.

PivotLink was the only pure Software as a Service (SaaS) BI vendor ranked in the study. Vendors were grouped into three categories based on general market profiles: "Titans," "Established Pure-plays" and the "Emerging" vendors group combining SaaS, open source, visualization tools and desktop tools.

PivotLink's 3 Key Takeaways from the "Wisdom of Crowds" BI Market Study

  1. "Emerging" BI vendors are displacing most "Titans" in number of deployments: The findings highlight an inflection point between 2006 and 2007 when deployments declined sharply, fueled in part by the BI acquisition spree and economic uncertainty. Since that time, the study shows a dramatic increase in adoption, predominantly among the "Emerging" vendors, as customers began deploying alternative solutions to harness the data inside the organization and the exploding volume of data in the cloud. While the shift is unmistakably clear, Dresner also notes that "the variety of BI tools seems likely to increase" in customer environments, a point that is reflected in the rising number of deployments in companies that have adopted PivotLink's SaaS BI platform to augment traditional on-premise BI systems, including VF Corporation's Asia-Pacific region (case study:, a leading online retailer and a global service parts logistics company.
  2. PivotLink leads rankings in key categories, garners some of the highest survey scores: According to the report, "PivotLink generally exceeded its peers and the overall sample. This is especially true in the areas of Sales, and Technical Support and was recommended by 100% of its customer respondents." Combined with PivotLink's strong customer loyalty (100% Q1 renewal rate), the company has set the standard for value among pure SaaS BI vendors.
  3. User-driven deployments are on the rise: The study notes a sharp increase in functional alignment, stating that "business users appear to be growing in influence," particularly in North America. While "Emerging" vendors are gaining an initial foothold in smaller organizations and among business users, the study highlights the dramatic scalability of deployments among "Emerging" vendors. Detailed findings cite a significant number of PivotLink deployments over 1,000 users and in organizations with more than 10,000 employees. With the latest release of the PivotLink platform and the new PivotLink ReadiMetrix analytical application suite for Sales, Marketing and Human Capital Management, PivotLink and its partners are helping business users achieve "quick BI wins" through greater self-service, while elevating the strategic role of IT in data governance and management.

"For nearly two years, PivotLink has seen the emergence of a 'New BI' in the Cloud that's affordable and quickly deployed," said Quentin Gallivan, CEO of PivotLink. "Howard Dresner's 'Wisdom of Crowds' report validates what we've heard from our customers -- that PivotLink is a compelling alternative to the costly and complicated deployments required by the on-premise solution providers."

Dresner added, "The 'Wisdom of Crowds' study is a unique perspective for measuring BI vendors and products based on users voicing what actually happens in the real world. It reveals the inflection point that has occurred and is driving a surge of innovation and adoption in the 'Emerging' segment. As BI 3.0 unfolds, the market should keep a close eye on 'Emerging' companies that are a great source of innovation in the market."

The "Wisdom of Crowds" Business Intelligence Market Study was created as a way to give a voice to those actually using BI solutions (i.e., "crowds sourcing"), creating a new and different perspective for measuring BI vendors and products in the market. An online survey allowed participants to evaluate vendor and product experience based on 32 criteria, which were scored and averaged by group and in total. The study was opened to input from any valid users with first-hand BI vendor and product experience. Although specific vendor selections were listed, any vendor or product could be entered.
