Group Workshop at Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park: Improving Management and Practice of Marine Activities

TADOUSSAC, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Sept. 22, 2009) - On September 9 and 10, in Tadoussac, about 150 people participated in the group workshop on marine activities. Organized by Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park, this workshop brought together concerned stakeholders. The goal of the workshop was to collect comments to prepare the Marine Activity Management Plan.

On the evening of September 9, four lecturers presented to the public and participants the results of their research on various aspects of protected marine conservation areas such as the marine park. Then on September 10, two simultaneous discussion forums were held, allowing stakeholders directly concerned by marine activities to discuss various measures aimed at partnerships and the visitor experience as well as the Marine Activities in the Saguenay-St. Lawrence Marine Park Regulations.

The discussions mostly concerned the speed of crafts in the marine park, different methods of reducing the impact of traffic on marine mammals, safety and security at sea, and training for different stakeholders offering activities tied to the marine park. Discussions also included promotion, signage, partnerships, tools for raising public awareness, as well as good environmental practices.

The material gathered during this workshop will add to the comments and propositions received during a series of individual meetings that have been held since last spring. The marine park will analyze the comments over the upcoming months in order to evaluate the most promising measures, which will lead to the final Marine Activity Management Plan for spring 2010.

The 1,245 km2 marine park is the first in Quebec to protect and develop an exclusively marine environment. It is jointly managed by the governments of Quebec and Canada and is being developed in co-operation with local stakeholders.
