ETFO AND HALTON TEACHERS LOCAL PRESENTS MORE THAN JUST RULES Attention: Assignment Editor, City Editor, Education Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO--(CCNMatthews - July 28, 2005) - For both teachers and students, happiness is a calm classroom. Creating a positive and effective learning environment is the focus of a summer course offered by the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) and the Halton Teacher Local.

The course is one of a wide range of professional development opportunities offered this summer by ETFO in partnership with its locals across the province. Courses are taught by ETFO members and designed to provide teachers with practical skills and resources to use in their classrooms. Hundreds of elementary teachers are expected to take part.

Available courses include a women's leadership institute, principals' qualifications program, and credit courses.

In a supportive environment where learning is presented in exciting and meaningful ways, students become a community of learners where mutual respect and self-worth prevail. This course looks at the need for classroom management, creating a positive learning environment, establishing effective rules and procedures, implementing appropriate disciplinary interventions, and building relationships for student success. An emphasis will be given to planning to ensure that all children feel safe, take risks, solve problems, make decisions, express their views, and work co-operatively with others.
