HGV Insurance Specialists Welcome New Traffic Measure

FLINT, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - Dec. 21, 2009) - Leading HGV insurance specialists Staveley Head have welcomed new measures by the Highways Agency, designed to alleviate traffic congestion on Britain's motorways.

As of Wednesday 9th December, drivers on a stretch of the M42 motorway will be able to use the hard shoulder between junction sliproads, in a bid to increase motorway capacity and improve journey times significantly.

This has involved re-aligning the existing southbound hard shoulder and installing a number of electronic message boards. These black and yellow signs will direct traffic and inform motorists as to when the hard shoulder is open to traffic and which lanes can be used to exit, or stay on the motorway. This will also help to improve safety on the road as traffic will be able to stay in lane at the junction, rather then having to move over at the end of the hard shoulder.

Known as 'through-junction running', the scheme means that motorists traveling south on the M42 will benefit from a 4 lane stretch of road from Junction 6 (Birmingham Airport) to Junction 4 (Monkspath). The cost of the initiative, estimated to be around £3million, has been funded by the Government's fiscal stimulus package and is part of ongoing work by the Highways Agency to kick start the economy.

If successful, this scheme could be rolled out across other motorways across the UK. Flintshire-based Staveley Head have welcomed this news, which will be of great benefit to many of their clients who operate fleets of HGVs and commercial vehicles. A spokesperson commented:

"This measure will make journeys in and around Birmingham safer and more reliable. Not only that, but it will also help to alleviate traffic congestion and make travelling through the West Midlands quicker and more convenient. This will be particularly beneficial to many of our clients, whose lorries and commercial vehicles pass through this area every day."
