HMSHost Update on Strike Action at Vancouver International Airport

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Feb. 18, 2010) - For a second day, HMSHost requests the Union reconsider its decision to take job action at Vancouver International Airport.

Yesterday afternoon, we sent a letter to the Union advising that we were prepared to return the employees to work at the end of their 24 hour strike if the Union commits that no further job action will be taken during the Olympics. This time frame includes both the Olympic Winter Games, scheduled to end on February 28, 2010, and the Paralympic Winter Games, scheduled to end on March 21, 2010.

This morning, we were advised that the Union is not prepared to make that commitment.

HMSHost is left with no choice but to implement a lockout today. In the absence of a commitment from the Union, we must attempt to minimize this impact to customer service. Intermittent job action is very disruptive to our customers.

HMSHost remains prepared to lift the lockout and return employees to work at any time that the Union will commit to no further labour disruption for the duration of the Olympic or Paralympic Games.

While we regret any inconvenience, it is important to note that the job action affects services at 16 of the HMSHost outlets at YVR, which represents less than half of our total outlets at the airport. More than 140 food and beverage and retail services remain open and operating at the Airport. We remain prepared to continue the negotiations for a new Collective Agreement.
