HMSHost Urges Union to Commit to No Labour Disruption at Vancouver International Airport During Olympic Games

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - Feb. 16, 2010) - In response to a strike notice by Unite Here Local 40 members at Vancouver International Airport (YVR), HMSHost today again asked that the Union commit to no labour disruption during the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. HMSHost urges also that the Union return fully to mediation quickly or agree to put negotiations on hold until after the conclusion of the Games.

The Unite Here Local 40 members who are HMSHost associates voted to strike at a meeting held February 12. The associates provide food and beverage and retail services at 16 outlets at YVR, which represents less than half of HMSHost's total outlets at the airport.

"We are disappointed that the Union pushed for a vote last week on the opening day of the Olympic Games," said Daryl Hrynkiw, General Manager, Food and Beverage, Host International of Canada, Ltd. at Vancouver International Airport. "HMSHost has made every effort to attempt to conclude bargaining on the Collective Agreement. It has been our sincere wish to reach a fair collective agreement for our food, beverage and retail associates and to prevent possible disruption of airport services to travelers during the Olympic Games."

"While we have been waiting for weeks for mediation to resume, Unite Here Local 40 has been organizing a strike vote," said Hrynkiw. "We hope that Unite Here Local 40 will recognize the importance of labour peace at this critical time for Vancouver and Canada and call off any strike action of HMSHost's associates that may be planned."

Should a strike occur, the following HMSHost outlets at YVR will not be affected, several with multiple locations: Burger King (3), Cinnabon, Jugo Juice, Jetway Café, Legends, Pizza Hut (2), Starbucks Coffee (6), Canadian Outdoor Adventure, Gifts of the Raven, Jetway News, News Connection, Olympic Store, Postcards, Sea to Sky, and Vancouver Marketplace. These operations are not part of the current negotiations.

Any disruption of food and beverage or retail services at HMSHost-managed facilities at Vancouver International Airport would affect only 16 HMSHost outlets, out of the more than 160 other food, beverage and retail concessions available at the Airport.

Background Information

  • On Friday, February 12, 2010, Unite Here Local 40 held a strike vote for HMSHost associates who provide food and beverage service at 18 outlets at Vancouver International Airport (YVR). Approximately 90% of the Host associates voted to strike and results of the vote were reported to the Labour Board late Friday afternoon.
  • Despite numerous attempts by HMSHost to start negotiations in 2009, the company and representatives of Unite Here Local 40 met only six times in the 11 months before January 6, 2010. After failing to reach a fair bargaining agreement, HMSHost issued a 72-hour lockout notice to Unite Here Local 40 on January 4, 2010. This was done to encourage the Union to return to the negotiation process.
  • Negotiations resumed on January 6, 2010, and continued until January 27, including weekends. After January 27, the Local 40 representatives did not respond to HMSHost's requests to continue to meet and negotiate an agreement. Negotiations were restarted with the help of a mediator on Monday evening, February 15, after the Union took the strike vote on February 12.
  • Approximately 285 employees are covered under the terms covered in the March 2009 CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement) that is currently under negotiation.
  • The pending closure of a Milestones restaurant at Vancouver International Airport is not related to the existing Collective Agreement under discussion with Unite Here Local 40. It should be considered a separate issue from the current negotiations.
