HQ Sustainable Maritime Products are Certified "Organic"

SEATTLE, WA--(Marketwire - January 16, 2008) - HQ Sustainable Maritime Industries, Inc. (AMEX: HQS) ("HQS" or the "Company"), a leader in toxin-free integrated aquaculture and aquatic product processing with operations in the pristine Island Province of Hainan, PRC, today announced that the Company's products were certified "organic" by Chinese authorities.

The Company received the Certification attesting to the organic standards for its tilapia production, processing, labeling, marketing and management system. Certification came after an initial annual audit conducted by Beijing Continental Hengtong Certification Co., Ltd. (CHTC), a certifier authorized by The China National Accreditation Service for Conformity (CNAS) and the Certification and Accreditation Administration of the PRC (CNCA).

Organic standards used in China, adopted in 2005, are the National Standards of PRC issued by The State General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, Standardization Administration of China. China participates with various International bodies to harmonize the meaning of organic food standards. These standards include those developed by the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements ("IFOAM") and relevant sections of the Codex Alimentarius. IFOAM is governed by the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization.

Chinese organic standards improve on standards in other parts of the world because they require a 'management system' that addresses product management by producers, processors and handlers. Chinese organic standards use principles and methods taken from ISO 9001-2000 - Quality Management System. Standards are established for file and record management, resources management, internal inspection, audit trails (complete traceability), and continuous improvement.

China's organic certification assures:

-- Use of at least 95% organic feeds

-- Fish grow-out through unique all-natural polyculture and other
natural methods avoiding chemicals (anti-biotics, hormones, and anti-
parasite chemicals such as malachite green) in the grow-out

-- Absence of fish meal in feed, reducing pressure on oceans

-- Feed sourced from locally grown organic crops that are 100% free of
    genetically modified organisms ("gmo-free")

-- Fish are raised in water that is certified as organic by avoiding
constantly flowing water with potential uncontrolled contaminants

-- Lower grow-out densities and better transportation and processing
methods that assure more humane treatment of live tilapia

HQS has received numerous requests for organic certified tilapia products from major retailers internationally.

"In the food industry, everyone involved in delivering food products has a responsibility in assuring quality. Organic quality standards are the highest standards available. Producing the highest quality is HQS' commitment. Being the first major Tilapia producer in the world certified by the Aquaculture Certification Council ("ACC") as having achieved Best Aquaculture Practices ("BAP") in relation to its tilapia production, HQS is further committed to providing consumers with a superior organic certified product and is the first in China to achieve these new organic standards," said Norbert Sporns, CEO of HQS.
