HRSDC: Minister Blackburn Welcomes Canadian Pacific and Teamsters Maintenance of Way Tentative Agreement

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 6, 2007) - The Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Labour and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, today welcomed news of a tentative agreement in the labour dispute between Canadian Pacific (CP) and Teamsters Canada Rail Conference Maintenance of Way Employees Division (TCRC MWED).

"I congratulate CP and TCRC MWED for their commitment to finding a negotiated solution to their differences," said Minister Blackburn. "The continued strength of the railway system is critical to the Canadian economy. I also appreciate the additional effort that both parties put into achieving this tentative agreement," added the Minister.

The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference represents some 3000 maintenance of way employees at CP. The previous collective agreement between the parties expired on December 31, 2006. The work stoppage began on May 15, 2007.

On June 1, 2007, Minister Blackburn invited both parties to Ottawa to meet with his chief mediator. Following intensive negotiations that began Monday morning, the parties reached a tentative settlement today, with the assistance of mediators. The agreement is subject to ratification by the union membership.

Through its Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, the Labour Program offers a number of services to assist employers and unions in resolving industrial relations disputes, and in improving their labour-management relations.

Minister Blackburn also indicated that the employees will return to work during the ratification process, an arrangement that would be banned under the provisions contained in the proposed Private Member's Bill C-415.
