Hampton: Only NDP Will Stand Up for Students, Environment

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 3, 2007) - NDP Leader Howard Hampton told students at the University of Toronto Mississauga Campus that only the NDP will is committed to making their lives more affordable, and ensuring they have a clean, green future.

"Ontario's post-secondary students and their families want to start off their careers without massive debts from Dalton McGuinty's soaring tuition fees. And they want a government that is taking real action to deal with pollution and global warming. The only Party that will fight for them is the NDP," said Hampton.

The NDP has promised to reduce tuition fees to the level they stood at before the McGuinty government took office in 2003, and then freeze them. This will save the average student about $460. Tuition in Ontario is well above the national average, and Ontario graduates face the highest average debt in Canada at $22,700. In addition to a tuition freeze, the NDP's commitment package includes a number of other practical, doable solutions that will make life more affordable for today's students.

"We'll raise the minimum wage, and we'll make everyday life more affordable by doing things that add up - like freezing transit fares, and putting in real rent controls so students aren't nailed with higher and higher rents every September," said Hampton.

Hampton also discussed the environment, saying that the NDP introduced a bill setting climate change targets to bring Ontario into line with its commitments under the Kyoto Protocol, but Dalton McGuinty shut down the legislature before the bill could be passed.

"Only the NDP has a practical, doable plan to take real action against global warming. Our plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions involves reducing our reliance on coal-fired electricity, expanding public transit, and getting tough on polluters," he said.

"Dalton McGuinty has let students down. He's put himself first by giving himself a $40,000 pay raise while watching tuition and everyday costs like transit escalate. Students can count on the NDP to stand up for them by taking practical steps to make their lives more affordable, and make sure they have a clean, green future," said Hampton. "Students and their families know there's only one way to make sure Dalton McGuinty doesn't let them down again - vote NDP."
