Health Alliance Plan: Is a Lack of Dental Insurance Becoming a Pain?

Local Leaders Partner to Address Growing Gaps in Dental Coverage

DETROIT, MI--(Marketwire - March 30, 2010) -  Putting off regular dental care can lead to disease or discomfort that can get in the way of work or daily tasks, and require expensive treatment. A root canal, for example, can cost as much as $1,000.

Health Alliance Plan (HAP) and Delta Dental of Michigan announced today that help is on the way for individuals and families in 23 Michigan counties who may be foregoing routine dental care because they lack dental insurance.

Delta Dental provides dental coverage to more than 5,000 HAP Medicare Advantage members. Now they are turning their attention to the under-65 population, offering dental plans to purchasers of HAP's "SOLO" medical plans.

"Dental care is an important part of overall health and well-being, but too many people aren't getting the care they need because they simply can't afford it," said Jamie Spriet, HAP vice president, Business Development. "By offering dental coverage to SOLO members through our partnership with Delta Dental, we are helping them get the regular care they need to stay healthy, as well as financial protection from unexpected and often expensive problems."

The three new SOLO dental plans are the most competitively priced plans in Michigan, ranging from around $17 to $35 per month. The "High" and "Medium" options (PPO Point-of-Service plans) offer a larger network and lower costs for in-network services, while the "Low" option (PPO) only covers in-network services. All plans cover diagnostic and preventive services, X-rays and emergency palliative treatment in full, with no waiting periods. All plans have a $50 deductible on Class II and III benefits, such as oral surgery, root canals, crowns and bridges.

SOLO plans are available in 23 Michigan counties: Arenac, Bay, Clare, Genesee, Gladwin, Gratiot, Huron, Iosco, Isabella, Lapeer, Livingston, Macomb, Midland, Monroe, Oakland, Ogemaw, Roscommon, Saginaw, Sanilac, St. Clair, Tuscola, Washtenaw and Wayne.
