Health Minister Joins Hospitals in their bid to enhance new business

Attention: Assignment Editor, Health/Medical Editor, Media Editor, News Editor, Photo Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO, MEDIA ADVISORY--(Marketwire - Oct. 5, 2009) - - Minister David Caplan, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, The Hospital for Sick Children, and various international leaders and other hospital and healthcare providers will join under one roof at the Canadian Healthcare Business Development Network (CHBDN) conference from October 5 to 7th, 2009. The network brings together representatives of Canada's hospital executives and their public and private enterprise partners for education, discussion, networking, sharing of expertise, and creating value. Collectively, CHBDN institutions are estimated to represent over $25 billion in annual healthcare expenditures.

The purpose of the conference is to help identify and enhance new innovations and revenue generation opportunities which ultimately help sustain and expand patient care within hospitals. The conference will highlight examples where hospitals are proving this method successful, increasing their ability to foster innovation and act as 'living labs' to test various technologies and services, speed up the process for them to adopt the newest and most effective innovations, while at the same time benefiting from the revenue generated from the partnerships.

The network believes this in turn will also improve the health of the economy, as innovation stimulates economic growth and development inside hospital walls and within the broader community.

Examples of the network at work:

Enhancement of the patient experience, both directly and indirectly:

* Collaborating with pharmaceutical and medical devices industries to create new technologies, devices and medications to improve quality of life;
* Health and wellness services becoming available within hospital environments for the first time that complement existing traditional realms of patient care, and;
* The development of a robust 'suite' of retail and service initiatives.

There's a world of opportunity out there to bring innovation and sustainable development to our public Ontario healthcare system.

The Minister will give his address on Tuesday October 6. Please arrive by 9 a.m. in order to hear the Minister give his remarks.
Location: The Hilton Toronto, 145 Richmond Street West
