Healthcare Study Reveals 82 Percent of Respondents' Healthcare Organizations Are Expanding Case Management Services

BeyeNETWORK Survey Identifies Top Threats to Profitability and Downstream Care Quality

NAPLES, FL--(Marketwire - May 5, 2010) -  A new study by the BeyeNETWORK shows marked growth in case management services and a rising need for integrated information management technologies in case management-practicing healthcare organizations in the U.S.

The research, commissioned by ASG Software Solutions, reveals that case management services are expanding in 82 percent of the U.S. healthcare organizations represented in the survey. According to the BeyeNETWORK report, this increase in case management activity is being driven by the burgeoning complexity of case processes, quality demands, and regulatory compliance, as well as by the overall expanding responsibilities of case managers.

Today's case managers are rapidly moving from their traditional functions as discharge planners and care coordinators to become what BeyeNETWORK calls "outcomes managers." This augmented scope of accountability, which incorporates clinical, financial, and operational outcomes, necessitates greater information-sharing and broader content integration -- both inside and outside of individual healthcare facilities.

Through integrated information management, sophisticated management processes, and the ability to receive the right information at the right time, case managers are better equipped to combat what survey respondents identified as the top threats to organizational profitability and downstream care quality, including:

  • Patients staying beyond discharge: 70 percent of respondents said that 11 or more patients stay beyond planned reimbursement
  • Recidivism: as many as one in 10 patients snap back into the same conditions that healthcare services were intended to alleviate
  • Unnecessary procedures: 45 percent of respondents estimated the monthly value of paid procedures later deemed unnecessary to be between $25,001-$50,000
  • Penalties: failure to meet clinical and/or IT norms can also take a hefty bite out net profit -- between six to 10 percent for 43 percent BeyeNETWORK survey respondents

BeyeNETWORK's study is based on a survey of more than 100 professionals at U.S. healthcare institutions with an average of 540 affiliated physicians and 266 beds.

Quotes

Paul Toth, Regional Vice President, ASG Healthcare
"Case managers are charged with efficiently coordinating the entirety of a patient's care. If the proper processes are in place -- and if the relevant information is accessible -- hospital costs decrease and patients receive optimized care. It's a delicate balance, but with the right methodology and the right technology, it's definitely achievable."
