Healthy U Vending Takes Local Students to School on Better Snacking

Four High Schools in McHenry County Add Vending Machines With Healthier, All-Natural Alternatives

MCHENRY, IL--(Marketwire - February 2, 2010) - Crystal Lake South, Crystal Lake Central, Cary-Grove and Prairie Ridge High Schools are adding new machines with all-natural, healthy food and beverage selections from local vending company Healthy U today, providing students with an alternative to the sugary drinks and empty-calorie snacks found in most traditional machines.

With childhood obesity rates tripling in less than 30 years, the CDC as well as state and federal governing bodies recommend that schools implement nutrition standards to provide students with healthy choices throughout the school day and throughout the school campus.

In response to this, District 155, the district encompassing all four high schools, has developed a comprehensive wellness program to promote good nutrition, physical activity as well as a healthy environment. Supplementing the healthy options available in the schools' cafeterias during lunch hours, Healthy U's environmentally friendly vending machines offer an easy-to-implement, cost-effective way to provide better snack choices for students and help teach healthier eating habits.

"We all know how important eating right is to mind, body and soul, especially to those that are still growing and developing," said T Hephner, Healthy U president. "As such, we are excited to partner with the District 155 high schools to provide students with healthy, nutritious, energy-rich alternatives to the traditional snack foods found in most vending machines."

McHenry, IL-based Healthy U vending was started in the spring of 2009 and is the brainchild of pharmaceutical industry veteran T Hephner, who has a mission to bring healthy snack and beverage alternatives to Chicagoland's schools and businesses.

"I started Healthy U in response to an unmet need I saw with my own kids. Unless we packed healthy snacks for them 'to go,' they didn't have many choices at school that weren't full of sugar or processed ingredients," said Hephner. "I think our schools have done a great job of overhauling the lunch room; however, kids in particular need more brain fuel throughout the day in order to put their best foot forward in the classroom and during after-school sports and other extracurricular programs."

The new vending program will roll out this week with a total of 10 new Healthy U vending machines dispersed throughout the four high schools. While they will change according to preference and request, a few of the great-tasting, all-natural snack and beverage brands that will be regularly stocked in the machines include: Rock N Roll Gourmet's Hippie Chips, Pirate's Booty, Clif Bar and Talking Rain.
