Help Donate Pasta to Put Food on the Table for Someone in Need

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 8, 2009) -

Attention: assignment, food, lifestyle community editors

Catelli®, Canada's largest manufacturer of pasta and CO-OP/ THE MARKETPLACE stores have joined forces to help those in need in Western Canada.

For every 325g to 500g box of Catelli pasta sold until November 27th Catelli, in partnership with the CO-OP/ THE MARKETPLACE stores, will donate one serving of pasta to food banks in Western Canada.*

"We know that hunger is considered a hidden problem in Canada," said Karen Scicluna, Director of Marketing for Ronzoni Foods Canada Corporation. "The economic impact this year means that even more Canadian children, women and men are going to bed hungry. We wanted to try and help; our goal is to donate 75,000 meals of pasta to those in need in Western Canada. We've run a similar program in Quebec for the past four years and based on the success there, we felt we could bring the program West and fulfill an immediate need here. While Western Canadians are enjoying Canada's number one favourite meal, pasta, they can know they are putting food on someone else's table, someone who really needs it."

The exclusive nature of the program is a first for Catelli. "We felt teaming up with the Co-operative Retailing System would allow us to reach and help as many Western Canadians as possible," said Ms. Scicluna.

The goal of the program is to keep as many of the meals as possible right in the communities that purchase the product and that are making the donations a reality.

"We are excited to have been selected by Catelli to be their partner in this program," said Al Hollman, Food Marketing Director for Federated Co-operatives Limited. "As the Co-operative Retailing System, we strive to be an integral part of the communities that CO-OP/ THE MARKETPLACE stores operate in. The fact that we are working to keep as many of the donated meals in the actual communities that make the donations possible means that we are actually able to help our neighbours in need."

It's Your Pasta: Catelli and Canadians -- A long-standing relationship

Since Carlo Oronato Catelli opened the first pasta factory in Canada in Old Montreal in 1867, Catelli pasta has been a pantry and dinner table favourite for many Canadians. From generation to generation, the tie to Catelli brand products has been so strong that despite many passing food trends, Catelli pasta remains a part of family traditions. In fact, Catelli is more than a staple; it is a brand families have grown up with, embraced and made a part of their lives.

"We have a proud heritage of being innovative and truly understanding the needs of Canadian consumers," said Karen Scicluna, Director of Marketing for Ronzoni. "We embrace our history as one of Canada's oldest companies and believe that at Catelli, we have a responsibility to be an outstanding corporate citizen. Canadians believe it's 'their' pasta, a connection we officially recognized this year when we incorporated the slogan "It's Your Pasta" right into our branding."

Catelli: THE leader in Canada

The number one pasta manufacturer in Canada, Catelli's leadership stems from the quality and the variety of its products. A fat- and sodium-free source of riboflavin (B2 vitamin) and iron, Catelli pasta allows families to savor a delicious and nutritious meal at a great price.

More than 280 skilled Catelli employees make no less than 165 products and shapes including spaghetti, spaghettini, linguine, fusilli, macaroni, vermicelli, and fettuccine in a factory on Notre-Dame Street East in Montreal. These products are sold under the Catelli (blue box), Catelli Healthy Harvest, Catelli Bistro, Catelli Express, Catelli Smart and Lancia brands. Ronzoni Foods Canada Corp. is the maker of Catelli pasta.
