Last night over 200 homeless people slept on the floor and pews of First United Church in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. It will be a similar scene tonight.

To provide temporary beds for the homeless who seek shelter in the church, First United is reaching out to the community and asking for help in purchasing a number of bed-bug resistant, metal bunk beds.

"Each of the bunks will be used inside the church to provide sleeping space for two homeless people now sleeping on the floor," says Rev. Ric Matthews of First United.

"These temporary beds will take up no more space than is presently occupied by people sleeping in pews and on the floor. But they will provide a little bit of comfort, dignity and a healthier situation for the many of the homeless who seek shelter in the church."

The church is seeking donations of any amount to help purchase the bunks, which cost approximately $500 each.
