Hennepin Healthcare System Selects Mediware's InSight for Performance Management

Executives and Staff of the 900-Bed Community Health System Will Use Mediware Software to Monitor New Strategic Programs Introduced Throughout the Hospital and Clinics

LENEXA, KS--(Marketwire - April 8, 2010) -  Mediware Information Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: MEDW) announced today that Minneapolis-based Hennepin Healthcare System, Inc. will join the growing number of nationally recognized healthcare organizations to license Mediware's InSight performance management software solution. Hennepin plans to use InSight to help its 900-bed hospital and clinic system measure new strategic planning and improvement initiatives. The InSight business intelligence system enables a single, integrated source of data across an organization's disparate systems and includes an array of dynamic, multi-dimensional and interactive features designed to help improve performance and outcomes. It will be used by staff at every level across the Hennepin system, from the CEO to departmental managers, to track strategic planning targets, quality measures, safety programs and operational initiatives.

Already recognized as one of the safest and most wired hospitals in the U.S., Hennepin is undergoing a transformation focused on continuous improvement across all aspects of its organization, which includes building long-term strategic plans as well as annual plans targeting core areas of improvement like safety, patient satisfaction and regulatory compliance. Much of Hennepin's visionary improvement planning process is led by Chief Quality Officer W. Terry Howell, Ed. D., who joined the organization in September of 2009. Dr. Howell has spent his career in the healthcare industry defining plans and processes designed to focus on quality and performance improvement.

"For each area of our plan, our teams have defined objectives, indicators, targets and tactics, but our existing systems weren't capable of tracking our progress effectively," said Dr. Howell. "Of all the products we reviewed, InSight was clearly the most capable of the field. It provides us with a comprehensive solution we can use for our entire enterprise; one that's flexible and easy to use. InSight allows us to quickly build indicators that provide useful, real-time performance information we can use to manage all aspects of our organization."

Part of Dr. Howell's philosophy is that an organization needs timely, actionable data to drive plans and actions, and a systematic process is vital to the organization's accountability for performance. Using InSight, Hennepin executives will have the ability to mine and aggregate data from any existing source across the entire organization to create a holistic, dashboard view of performance. Then, using InSight's drill-down capabilities, they can further monitor and investigate progress as well as track trends and patterns in virtually any area of performance.

"We have all kinds of management systems and electronic clinical data," continued Dr. Howell. "But we just have trouble getting to it to create actionable information. This is where InSight will provide us a huge productivity advantage," he said. "We can define any type of process to measure and have InSight automatically get the needed data and update our dashboards. InSight will aggregate data from other systems to present current performance information and allow us to drill down into our results to see performance by department and even by specific employees."

Dr. Howell said, "Our goal is to become an evidence-based, data-driven organization, and to make this data visible across our organization. Our CEO and the entire executive leadership team have bought into the process, and I think eventually every department will have its own InSight dashboard. The tool is very powerful but also so very easy to use."

The Hennepin Healthcare System includes the large and modern Hennepin County Medical Center, an academic teaching facility and a Level One trauma center, which is part of the Safety Net program providing a significant level of care to low income, uninsured and vulnerable populations. The Medical Center has been listed among America's best hospitals by U.S. News and World Report for 13 consecutive years. Hennepin also operates more than 25 clinics focused on specialty care services throughout the Minneapolis metropolitan area.

"Hennepin was already an excellent healthcare organization, with very dedicated clinicians that live our mission of 'Every life matters,'" said Dr. Howell. "But our organization has invested in the skills, tools and technologies that will help us continue to improve and to ensure we provide world class healthcare to our community. Mediware's InSight will be a part of this process."

Thomas Mann, Mediware president and chief executive officer, said of the announcement, "Hennepin is an organization that is dedicated to quality and improvement, and we're thrilled that they have chosen InSight as the foundation for their strategic planning program. This organization has invested heavily in the staff, tools, process improvement and planning necessary to deliver the highest quality care. We are honored to add them to our family of customers."

In addition to InSight, which is a highly configurable performance management tool, Mediware offers preconfigured 'Focused InSight Solutions' that provide pre-packaged indicators designed to quickly target specific areas of care. Focused InSight Solutions are currently available for Nursing Management, Revenue Cycle Management, Physician Profiles, Staffing Effectiveness and many other targeted areas.

Further, Mediware is launching preconfigured InSight solutions for use with its existing product portfolio, including HCLL Transfusion for hospital blood banks, WORx for hospital pharmacies, Blood Center Technologies and home infusion providers. The first beta customers have already been signed for HCLL InSight, with the remainder to launch throughout the rest of the year.
