High Point Regional Health System Selects McKesson to Enhance Patient Safety and Business Operations

Clinical and Automation Solutions and Management Analytics to Drive Enhanced Quality of Care and Operational Effectiveness

ATLANTA, GA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- January 30, 2006 -- High Point Regional Health System (High Point), a 384-bed medical facility serving Winston-Salem, Greensboro and High Point, N.C., is implementing clinical, automation and business performance solutions from McKesson in its ongoing effort to provide outstanding service and safe, high-quality patient care. Building on its existing health IT infrastructure, High Point is deploying solutions from the Horizon Clinicals® suite such as medical imaging and HorizonWP® Physician Portal, a Web-based portal that enables secure "anytime, anywhere" access to patient information from physicians' offices, homes and other locations. With diagnostic images and test results online as well as medication orders and data such as patient vital signs, the health system expects to enable physicians to make faster, more informed treatment decisions.

"Equipping physicians and other clinicians with sophisticated IT tools is essential to clinical excellence and helping our patients achieve the best possible health outcomes," said Eugene Roth, High Point's chief information officer. "Information technology is the glue that will enable us to provide greater continuity of care for the patients and communities we serve. McKesson has been a strong partner over the past 20 years, and we look forward to the added benefit that these new solutions can provide."

To further enhance patient safety, High Point has also focused on safe medication management, upgrading its pharmacy robot and selecting McKesson's pharmacy information system and automated medication dispensing system. These systems will be integrated with McKesson's automated cabinets to more accurately dispense, store and track the distribution of medications in patient care areas, including the operating room where High Point plans to automate anesthesia and narcotics dispensing. In taking these steps, High Point is setting the foundation for caregivers to check the "five rights" of medication safety -- right patient, right drug, right dose, right time and right route.

High Point is complementing its clinical and automation capabilities with revenue cycle and performance management systems to more effectively manage the health system's financial and administrative functions. "Given the dynamics of healthcare today, it is imperative to run an efficient and focused healthcare organization," said Susan Phelps, High Point's director of patient accounting. "The investment in these management tools will enable us to quickly determine whether a claim denial is warranted or not, which will help us optimize appropriate revenues."

To support executive decision-making and quality improvement initiatives, High Point will implement an advanced performance management solution that combines clinical and financial data analysis to evaluate and quantify the outcomes of procedures and processes. Other solutions include an integrated contract management solution to help ensure claims accuracy and shorten payment cycle time, and an executive dashboard that provides easy, secure and timely access to financial, clinical and operational performance information through a Web browser.

"McKesson's goal is to demonstrate a strong benefit and return on investment in health IT as High Point seeks to achieve its patient safety and business performance objectives," said Pamela Pure, president of McKesson Provider Technologies. "We're excited to expand on the relationship we've had with High Point and look forward to the opportunity to be part of its plan for making healthcare safer in the community."
